I’ve been a bit reluctant to discuss one of my secret weapons Squidoo.  But here it goes…

I have made some serious cash through affiliate programs using Squidoo.  Squidoo was started and is run by Seth Godin, marketing genius, author and business man.  Squidoo was created to take advantage of Web 2.0 community mentality and provide a set of growing tools to allow users to create “lenses” on their topic of choice.  Using Squidoo is completely free and it has a revenue sharing element that gives users a bit of cash for their work.  I won’t dig into the details of the revenue sharing aspect because it generally provides small amounts of money, even for popular lenses.

Squidoo is loved by the search engines.  Google currently has it ranked as a PR 7 site and lenses usually get quick indexing from the big engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.  Because Squidoo carries a high relevance score with the search engines the Lenes get great placement in the search results- usually on the 1st page!  I’ve had Lenses hit the top 3 of all major search engines within 24 hours of creating the lens!  You can’t buy these results at any price!

A few cautions-  What you post at Squidoo needs to be relevant, unique and if it smells like spam it will get detected by the filters at Squidoo and blocked.  You can even get your account dumped if you simply trying to spam out the system.  Although the filter details are not published there are a few guidelines:

• Use at least 4 modules- any less will prevent you from publishing or will trigger the spam Lens filters.
• Don’t keyword stuff.  Using the same word(s) over and over may raise the Spam flag.
• Too many outbound links will interest the filters.
• There are a few specific words that if even used once will set off the filters.
• Create an intro and add a picture or suspicion may be triggered.

I won’t get into specifics of what I include in successful Lenses but it always comes down to content, uniqueness and having something people want.  Adult material easily fits into all of these categories.  The fact that the spam filtering features of Squidoo are so strong only strengthens my position on the site.  My Lenses stand out much better with all of the junk filtered out and those not willing to put a bit of time into it going elsewhere.  At any given time I own 3-4 of the top 10 adult lenses and my lens collection sees on average at least 50,000 visitors a week.

Did I mention Squidoo is free?

I’ve received a few questions about using Google Adsence on adult sites. Don’t do it! It violates the Adsence Terms of Service and will get you Adsence account shut down- no warning, no debate- your done.

So what can you use that allows you to place a small bit of code on your pages and have content based ads (including adult!)? Etology is the solution. Etology is a newly established Web 2.0 advertising network that has many features that I think will make it a highly competitive option to Adsence. I have placed it on almost every website I run including my non-adult sites. I no longer use Adsence on any of my sites. Etology lets you pick the ad space size and shape and name your own price for the ad space.

You can instantly place the short code on your page(s) and it will be filled with generic, content based ads until someone purchases the ad space on your site. Etology handles the billing for the space and management of the ad- you do nothing but the initial code placement. When the ad expires it is replaced by the next purchased ad or reverts back to content based ads. Your ad space will have a link on it to purchase the space and your ad space is shown on the Etology web site under the appropriate category for its type. I price my ad space according to the site traffic, ad size, location and my mood at the time!

Seth Godin, famous marketing guru and author uses Etology on Squidoo Adult Lenses. If its good enough for Seth I’m listening- more on Squidoo in a future post! There’s the other side of Etology too. That is- buying ads to promote your sites. You can either find ad space by locating it on participating sites or simply visiting Etology and scrolling through the categories and drilling down into the ad space listings. Not quite as complicated or targeted as Google Adwords but that’s a plus.

Etology offers a great ad selling and buying service. It is nowhere near as complicated as what Google or Yahoo offers and is adult website friendly. Still in Beta but nothing but functional, Etology is something all adult webmasters need to take notice of. Remember- you heard it here first.

Real Bucks is another affiliate program I use and recommend.  Signup is quick and easy- you can either opt for payment by CCBill, ePassport or through their traditional method- a check issued every 2 weeks.  Real Bucks features many unique site with quite a few gay, toon and fetish sites.  Much of their content is exclusive.  The current site lineup:

Real Bucks promo tools include basic site links, RSS feeds, a wide selection of banners,  free video and picture galleries, downloadable content.  They also offer free blogs and web hosting for promoting their sites.  Support is great and available 24/7.  Payout levels are 50-60% for partnership arrangements and reoccurring membership credit is included.

The quality of the free galleries, pictures and videos provided by Real Bucks is better than most affiliate programs.  They don’t scrimp on what they provide, making them easier to sell.  I am especially happy with the video quality- most scale to full screen quite nicely.  All in all- Real Bucks is a fine adult affiliate program both for the beginning adult webmaster or the seasoned pro.
